A two-part paradise lost
Composed of Calamity Jane to Her Daughter by Ben Johnston and
The Collected Works of Billy the Kid by Michael Ondaatje & Gavin Bryars (creation)

Calamity / Billy is a musical theatre project built around two mythical figures of the American west, Calamity Jane and Billy the Kid. Jean Lacornerie had the idea of pairing this legendary heroine with the most famous outlaw of the Far West, Billy the Kid, through Michael Ondaatje’s The Collected Works of Billy the Kid. The English composer Gavin Bryars was asked to set the text to music. The first piece is composed for a soprano voice (Claron McFadden). The second piece is composed for two voices: Bertrand Belin for Billy and Claron McFadden for all of the female characters he encounters (Sally Chisum, Angela Dickinson and Paulita Maxwell).
